Established in 1983, the USBGC recognized a need to promote sustainable practices in the building and construction industry. In 2000, the USGBC unveiled the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green certification program to spotlight projects that represent the best in environmental performance in the United States. Today, over 181,000 professionals hold LEED certification.
